Mesa Roldan, in the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, Almeria, Spain

Part 2 - The Destination

At the top of the hill is the Fort of Mesa Roldan. This is an old fort, about 300 years old, never used for its original purpose of defending against pirates and invaders. After it was built it was realised that the fort was too high for their canon balls and weapons to reach the invaders, and too far away to send couriers with warnings. Today, people go there just for the views, and the park maintenance people use it as a storeroom.

The park is an area of natural beauty of all kinds, from harsh and dramatic to soft and gentle. It covers a very large area. This is just one small part of it, but it is 10 minutes drive from where we live (from front door to car park) and is one of our favourite places for feeling the wind, admiring the views, studying the rocks and plants, and even just sitting. A place of peace and tranquility, where nature is the boss.
