photoblog image Grand Entrance

This is the entrance to a mansion in Rochester, Kent.  The house was two medieval buildings which were combined in the late 16th or early 17th century to create a mansion house. It has been restored and refurnished in its original style, with as many items original to the period as could be located.  I am told it is absolutely wonderful inside.   It also has wonderful gardens which are open to the public in the summer.

Lots of fascinating information and some pictures on the website here.  Be sure to check every page for the pictures.

Charles Dickens lived in Rochester, and this is the Satis House of Dickens "Great Expectations", the home of Miss Havisham.

Great topiary Sheila, a lovely shot with the half open gate.
Sheila, in Kent, SE England: Thanks Sally. I haven't seen the gardens but I'm told they are immaculate and this topiary is just a small sample of that perfection.

I rather like the way we are right up against the beautiful iron gates as if we are being ushered into the house.
Sheila, in Kent, SE England: Thanks Chad, I'm glad I gave you that impression.

Added interest with the Dickens link Sheila
Sheila, in Kent, SE England: Rochester is full of Dickens links Bill. Some very tenuous, but this is quite clearly in the book.
